Amy Winehouse documentary sets new box office record

‘Amy’ has recorded the largest ever opening weekend sales for a UK documentary at the British box office. The film has reportedly grossed just over £520,000 from its original 133 screens; which is also due to expand to over 200 screens from Friday, July 10th.

Fahrenheit 9/11 directed by Michael Moore in 2004, is the only documentary that has surpassed Asif Kapadia’s Amy grossing over £7 million pounds in the UK, the figure that Amy is now chasing.

The controversial documentary has had a mixed response with the late singers father, Mitch Winehouse, labelling the film as ‘misleading’ and inaccurate in its account of their relationship. Mark Ronson on the other hand, a close friend of Amy Winehouse, has spoken out in support of the documentary, deeming it ‘respectful’ but a ‘hard watch’ due to the memories that it brings back.
