Detroit Pistons big man Andre Drummond has had a breakout season this year. Detroit took a big gamble on his ability to step up when they let Greg Monroe walk for nothing in the summer and Stan Van Gundy decided to build around him in a similar fashion to the way he did Dwight Howard in Orlando. Drummond responded by averaging 16.4 points, 14.9 rebounds (league leading) and 1.4 blocks per while posting an astonishing 66 double-doubles (also league leading). In light of his excellent season, we were delighted to get the opportunity to chat exclusively with Drummond on his play this year and more.
On Detroit beating Golden State this season: “It was a hell of a game. We played incredible defensively, we did everything we’re supposed to do with our matchups. We made them uncomfortable and made them take difficult shots. It just really shows how good defensively we can be.”
On playing against Kobe Bryant during his final season: “It’s definitely an honor to be one of the few players to be on the floor with him during his last go around. It’s an honor to get to speak to him, and be around him in his presence. It’s definitely a milestone for me.”
On his All-Star experience in Toronto: “This being my first All-Star Game it gives me something to really work for and to keep striving for. Once you’re in once you have to keep doing it. You have to raise your bar. The experience was out of this world. (Being around) A group of guys that have been there multiple times, and me being my first with Isaiah (Thomas) I felt like I belonged.”
On Stan Van Gundy: “Stan is a different kind of guy. He’s really been great communication wise, we’ve been in constant communication- picking each other’s brains about what we think about the team and what needs to be done. He’s a great coach to have.”
On if he sees himself as the best big man in the NBA: “For me I just do what I do best, which is rebound the ball. In the paint I try and finish everything strong and be a leader for my team.”
On his favorite soccer team and player: “My favorite player is (Cristiano) Ronaldo and my favorite team is Inter (Milan).”
