Who We’re Listening to Right Now: Roy Woods, Nav & Russ

Oct 10 2016 BY Aaron Rattu

With so much music and so many artists emerging on a daily basis, it can be hard to stay in the loop. Even worse, it can be easy to overlook quality artists who are putting out great music. This is where we come in and here is a collection of three artists on the come up who we are currently listening to, check them out below.

Roy Woods

We all know how exclusive the OVO camp is, but what we do know is when they sign artists we receive nothing but majestic work; take PARTYNEXTDOOR and MajidJordan for example, the art of creating a new sound whereby the music speaks for itself.

Enter Roy Woods, a Brampton native who was introduced way back in the summer of 2015 during the first ever episode of OVO Sound Radio, on a track entitled “Drama” featuring the six god himself, Drake. Shortly after, it was announced Roy Woods was signed to the prestigious Octobers Very Own label and released his debut EP Exis. But fast forward a year and many began speculating on the absence of the young Toronto artist; who then spontaneously dropped his second EP i. This project took on a sound OVO fans can recognise, the dark Toronto sound the label has created over the past few years.

Differently, this EP showed more of a versatile side to the 20-year-old. With carrying heavy themes of relationships with females, disloyalty as well as personal trust issues, we also get an insight into his culture through the Caribbean influenced lead single off the project “Gwan Big Up Urself”.

With a lot of expectations of being on one of the leading labels in music at the moment, the raspy-toned singer, songwriter who has been compared to Michael Jackson, whom he has admitted to looking up to from a tender age definitely does not disappoint.

Another Canadian artist on the come up… coincidence? Certainly not. Rexdale born and bred, from a Punjabi background; producer and rapper Nav has managed to accumulate over three million plays on every track on his Soundcloud yet has still been able to remain a mystery figure.

The mysterious figure has made his way into the limelight without giving much away about his own identity. His distinct production laced with lyrics ranging from heavy drug use to the lack of appreciation he has faced before his rise to fame; it is refreshing to hear a rapper who documents the obstacles he faces on his route to success as he so lives it.

The main question being asked, though is regarding Nav’s affiliation to The Weeknd’s XO movement. He has dropped numerous hints in tracks and his debut video for the track “TTD” was even tweeted out by The Weeknd himself, creating a lot of speculation regarding the musical relationship between the two.

Slowly but steadily, Nav has created a lot of hype around his work and it seems as if his address book is growing after dropping the single “Up” featuring none other than super producer Metro Boomin and even featured on Travis Scott’s latest album Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight.

In today’s rap scene, we are constantly seeing artists think outside of the box and create their own genres and sounds and Nav is most definitely one who stands out in the forefront.

Consistency is key and this is definitely the case for 23-year-old Russ from New Jersey. The rapper has managed to upload multiple singles on a monthly basis to his Soundcloud for the past couple of years and its only up until now where he is beginning to receive some mainstream credit, with a following of 214 thousand.

Originating from Sicily, he often raps about the financial struggles his family have faced and his desire to put them in financial stability. As well as this, Russ is also his own producer and uses his combination of rapping and singing in a falsetto to harmonise his music, which compliments each other greatly.

Having been reluctant to sign to a major label with the drive to make it as a creatively free independent artist, he recently penned a deal with Columbia Records. In a recent interview with Big Boy, he stated that this year marks the tenth anniversary of him grinding and making music that he has also been giving out free to his fans, so signing to a major label surely makes up for all the under appreciation he has faced.

As well as family themes in his music, Russ also documents his encounters with females and how at times, this has forced him to make sacrifices in his life in order to pursue his goals in the rap world, which is done in an extremely poetic, vivid way. His hard-hitting bars and also freestyle capability is something he is greatly praised for.

After recently selling out his first European tour and signing to Columbia, we are sure to expect a project from the New Jersey artist and look forward to seeing what comes out of his locker in the near future.
